FARO A COLÓN – COLUMBUS LIGHTHOUSE

Faro a Colón – Columbus Lighthouse – is a large mausoleum monument in Santo Domingo built in honour and in memory of Christopher Columbus, the explorer and discoverer of the New World. The monument, made in the shape of a Latin cross (inspired by the Christianization of the Americas), is approx. 800 mts long and 36.5 mts high. Construction work was completed in 1992, during the Joaquin Balaguer regime, in time for the celebrations of the Fifth Centenary of the Discovery of America and the Faro a Colón was inaugurated on October 6th 1992.

Arrighini Art Studio carried out all the cladding work, the exterior in white Carrara marble and the interior in white Statuario marble. The company was also responsible for dismantling the Tomb of Christopher Columbus, which up to 1990 had been lying in the First Cathedral of the Indios in Santo Domingo, and then reassembling it in the Columbus Lighthouse.
