MONUMENTO A LA CAÑA – THE SUGAR CANE MONUMENT.

The magnificent “Sugar Cane Monument”, a project by architect Christian A. Martínez Villanueva, is an 18-metre-long, life-size, bronze sculptural group by Nicola Arrighini, inaugurated in 1992 in the Villa Duarte sector in the province of Santo Domingo East, on the eastern bank of the Ozama River.

The monument consists of a cart full of sugar cane pulled by six oxen, and a man with a woman and child representing the family of sugar cane cutters and workers of the time. Due to its remarkable realism, the work is considered to be one of the highest quality sculptural monuments in Santo Domingo.
